RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Police say when 20 year old Colin Johnson arrived on the Watson Quality Ford car lot, he first looked at a truck with a salesman, then seemed interested in a Chevy Camaro parked on the grass.

"(The salesman) was gonna open the hood to show him the engine. About that time the guy tased him on the back of the neck, he grabbed the keys and took off in the car," says Watson Quality Ford General Manager Cliff Mitchell.

Another salesman saw it happen, and alerted the used car manager.

"Our used car manager happened to be on the phone with a Madison Police officer at the time," Mitchell says.

A chase ensued, up to Madison, then South on Highway 51 back to Ridgeland, to Ann E. Smith Elementary School.

"Saw 8-10 police cars (near) my driveway, brand new Camaro," says Grant Staples, who lives across Pear Orchard Road from the school. He arrived home to the big police presence, and the wrecked Camaro in the street.

"Apparently he tried to run out through the school to run from police, which would have been dangerous. They pinned him in, stopped the vehicle before he could do that. The vehicle was right off the driveway... there was lots of glass and a spot of blood on the pavement where the guy had been pulled from the car," Staples says.

The car had run behind the school. On the way out of the school, a Ridgeland Police officer rammed the car to stop it. The car was blocked in by Ridgeland Police, a Madison County Deputy, and a worker in an Entergy vehicle. Madison Police surrounded the vehicle.

Ridgeland Police Chief Jimmy Houston says the arrest was the second joint effort in two days. On Tuesday, agencies worked together to chase and arrest Rachel Strickland after police say she robbed someone at the Bank Plus ATM in Ridgeland.

Johnson is charged with felony fleeing, receiving stolen property, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm on school grounds, and numerous traffic violations. He will also likely be charged with armed robbery in Jackson.

Johnson received a few gashes on the face during the wreck. The car salesman is shaken up, but otherwise OK. He will take a day off work.
