9 injured in Brandon school bus accident

Posted: Updated:
BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The routine morning trip to school turned into a wild ride for a group of Rankin County students. Several children swapped a ride on the school bus for a ride in an ambulance, after a collision involving multiple cars.

"Twenty-six  children on the bus, plus one bus driver, plus the passenger vehicle" said Brandon Fire Chief Rob Martin. "None appeared to have life threatening injuries but obviously need to be checked out."

Of the 26 students, seven were taken to hospitals, all with minor injuries.

"There were bumps and bruises and a fairly significant laceration" added Martin.

The driver of the Chevy Tahoe suffered the deep cut and their injuries were classified as moderate. The driver of the Tahoe also may be at fault according to witnesses.

Student Roy Williams wasn't just a witness. He got caught up in the accident.

"I felt a bump again" said Williams. "I seen that car behind me, so I had to swerve over and then the car. I had to dodge 2 more cars and that's when the bus was coming across the intersections and car had hit the bus."

Brandon police officials back that up. They say the Tahoe was traveling north on Highway 18, and ran a red light just as the bus was making a left turn onto the highway from Greenfield Road.

Looking at the scene, witnesses say it fortunately wasn't as bad as it looked.
