Car show to benefit Byram Police Officer

BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Fast rides, classic cars, and custom bikes at the Jackson Dragway are driving toward the goal of helping Byram Police Sergeant Jay Nelson build a new house.

His older model mobile home burned to the ground in May, destroying all of Nelson's belongings.

-"The police department, community of Byram came together and had me a place to stay, clothes on my back and money in my pocket within hours. And this has been continuing, going on. I can't even begin to explain it," Nelson said.

Nelson's dog, Sadie, woke him up just before flames engulfed his bedroom.

"That's my hero. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her," Nelson added.

Byram Police began Operation Homeward Bound to help Nelson. Saturday's benefit car show was one of many fundraisers officers are hosting to help the veteran on the force.

"We like to ban together. We like to support each other and come together as a team and show him a lot of support and help him get back in a home because a lot of us take some things for granted," said Patrol Commander David Errington, Byram P.D.

Nelson is learning more about the bond between those who wear a badge.

"I've received money from police officers in New York that heard about my situation, never met them before in my life. I've had police officers from all over Mississippi bring me donations, money, food, clothes. I've never met these people in my life and that's the way police officers do, we take care of one another. It's a family," Nelson added.

With the number of souped up cars and vintage rides, along with the live music, it's clear Nelson's tragedy hasn't gone unnoticed.

"They help us out during the races and all that. It's just to give back to our community. They keep us safe, keep everyone in the City of Byram safe. We've been need them for a longtime now and we're just happy they're here," said Sean Curtis, Manager of Jackson Dragway.

No timetable has been set on when the new home will be built.
