Gas Prices continue to drop

PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There's some good news for drivers. Gas prices across the metro area are taking a nose dive.

The Murphy USA gas station on Highway 80 in Pearl has regular unleaded gas for $2.87 a gallon. If you use a Wal-Mart gift card there you can save an additional 10 cents a gallon.

"It's the lowest I've seen in a long time," Melonie Tomlinson said.

Tomlinson put about $20 in her tank. The last time she filled up she spent $3.09 a gallon. Tomlinson said she hopes the less expensive prices will shift towards other commodities too.

"Saves me some money you know that doesn't come easy that doesn't come easy and I'm hoping all the prices, groceries will go down, my brother says since the gas is going down groceries and stuff might," Tomlinson said.

According to AAA, the average cost for gas in Mississippi is $3.20 a gallon for regular unleaded. $3.11 is the average price for regular gas in Jackson. Some of the lowest prices at the pump are in Rankin County.

Mississippi's AAA spokesman said gas prices typically fall in the cooler months because there's less demand. Plus, a cheaper type of fuel is made during the fall and winter.

Gary Scott is filling up while the prices at the pump are more affordable.

"Oh, I was here yesterday and they (gas prices) were $2.90 there but there was so many people here I decided to come stop on the way to work," Scott said.

"I may try to scrap it up and get as much as I can while it's so low," Tomlinson said.
