PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police say one of their officers was bashed in the head with a beer mug by a man who couldn't be stopped by a stun gun or pepper spray.

The offer's head was stapled, and the man was accused of assault and resisting arrest.

Police said the officer, Jakhary Jackson, warned a jaywalker who passed in front of his patrol car in north Portland around 10 p.m. Monday.

Thomas Carlston, 41, began yelling profanities at Jackson, police said, and the officer then got out of his car. Officers said Carlston charged at Jackson, who used his Taser, but it had no effect.

A struggle ensued, during which Carlston hit Jackson with a mug, and the two covered about 50 yards as the officer tried unsuccessfully to subdue the man, authorities said.

Eventually, police said, five officers arrived and arrested Carlston.

A neighbor took out his cell phone and caught the altercation on camera.

"He did mutter to himself sometimes," Paul Larson said of his neighbor. "I introduced myself to him when I saw him move in and he introduced himself as Richard and a Christian."

The officer went to the hospital to get staples for a head injury and Carlston was also checked out by doctors before being turned over to police.

Carlston was supposed to be arraigned in court Tuesday, but the district attorney said he wouldn't cooperate and refused to come out of his cell, even to have a mugshot taken. Hours later, police managed to get his photo.

Carlston is facing charges of assault, assaulting a public safety officer and resisting arrest.
