Deputies in Union County say a young girl witnessed a shooting that left two people dead early Thursday morning.
Investigators responded to a shooting call around 6 a.m. on the 1300 block of Sikes Mill Road, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office.
A woman was found fatally shot inside a vehicle and a man was found shot dead in front of another vehicle.
The Sheriff's Office identified the victims as 36-year-old Mary Overman Ismail and 45-year-old Bobby Ihab Ismail, both of Monroe.
A 9-year-old child was an eyewitness to the crime, deputies say. She was located unharmed at a nearby child development center.
"She was able to run down the road," Union County Sheriff Office Captain Ronnie Whitaker said. "Where a passerby may have spotted her and called 911."
The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation.
Court documents show the Ismail's had a rocky relationship that date back to 1997. Records also show Mary Ismail took out a temporary restraining order against Bobby Ismail in September. It ended October 2nd. She took out another one, but that was denied.
Detectives have not commented on a motive, but neighbors are worried about the 9-year old girl.
"It's just very sad," Neighbor Debra said. "I have a nine year old daughter, so of course that bothers me that little girl had to see that. My heart goes out to her. Just glad she didn't get hurt."
The girl wasn't hurt but what she endured could scarred her for life.
"That's always difficult," the captain said. "Because of the child's age as to what she may have seen and witnessed."
The girl attends Fairview Elementary and school officials say support will be there for the girl when she needs it.
She is now in the custody on DSS until she can be released to next of kin.
