Flame retardants can cause neurological problems in children

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A new study finds pre-natal and childhood exposure to chemicals in flame retardants may increase the risk of attention disorders and other problems.

These compounds called P-B-D-E's are found in some foam furniture, electronics, carpets, upholstery and can be inhaled through dust.

Researchers found children who had higher blood concentrations of P-B-D-E's at the age of 7 had more neuro-developmental delays than their peers.

Many had attention issues, problems with fine motor skills and below average I-Q scores.

Experts recommend sealing any tears in upholstered furniture and to be sure children are washing their hands frequently.
