Steady rise in diabetes cases reported

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The U-S has experienced a dramatic rise in diabetes cases in the past few decades.

A new study from the CDC finds the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes increased in every state between 1995 and 2010.

While the rates remain highest in the south and Appalachian states, the largest increases were seen in Oklahoma, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama and Washington state.

Type 2 diabetes accounts for the vast majority of diabetes cases.

Experts say it can be prevented in part through weight loss and dietary changes.

This report is from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
