JPS has new administrator for special education program

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson Public School District has a new administrator.

JPS has been in hot water with the State Department of Education for months because of problems with its special education program.

Dr. Joseph Fisher is from Tennessee. He has been hired for the district's exceptional education services Corrective Action Plan or CAP. He will be paid $800 a day. Hearings have been held over the last few months to decide whether the district would lose its accreditation.

State education leaders say Fisher has extensive expertise in special education. He will be responsible for making sure JPS makes improvements, and complies with federal special education requirements.
