MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
It's not hard to find dogs and several of them around pet stores like Petco. Several dogs from the CARA shelter, the Mississippi Animal Rescue League and the Webster Animal Shelter were brought together for a mass animal adoption awareness event.
"You have all these good healthy happy labs or happy little Cocoas here who end up needing homes and just the demand for it is too many," said CARA volunteer, Matthew Holmes.
Holmes said adopting shelter animals like Cocoa, a five year-old Cockapoo is so important because shelters are overcrowded with animals. Unfortunately, thousands die every year.
"There's about 75,000 to 80,000 dogs put to sleep each year in Mississippi so there's a huge animal rescue need in Mississippi," said Holmes.
Denise Robinson has adopted three dogs. She just adopted a long haired Dotson named Millie a few days ago.
"They don't have anybody to take care of them and love them and we have to take care of God's creatures," said Robinson.
Chad Plumb has also adopted recently. Plumb has a little Terrier named Andy.
"He was in a cage and now he's in the yard and happy chasing the ball and he brings it back and he fits in good with our family," said Plumb.
Animal shelter advocates said if you have pet, get it spayed or neutered to help keep other pooches from ending up without a home.
CARA is also asking the public to pick an ornament and fulfill a wish of an animal at its 2nd Annual CARA Angel Tree Fundraiser. Items for the fundraiser must be returned by December 21.
