JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson police officer injured in the line of duty receives the department's highest honor.

Officer Rodney Daniels was honored at a special ceremony with the Medal of Valor.

A number of Daniels' family members were on hand, along with JPD officers.

Daniels has undergone a number of surgeries, as he continues to recover from an August shooting on West Capitol Street.

Saturday's service at Greater Bethlehem Temple Apostolic Faith Church was also fundraiser.

Officers across the city have donated to the Precinct 2 policeman's family and recovery efforts.

"It lets the officers know, when they're injured in the line of duty we don't forget. We are still supporting them even though they are not on the front lines, they are still with us in our hearts. And we don't just forget them. We wanted to let officer Daniels know he is not forgotten," said Jackson Police Department Deputy Chief Eric Wall.

Two officers also received a certificate of commendation. One officer was the first on the scene after Daniels was shot. The other policeman arrested the suspect wanted in the shooting.
