MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Mississippians are some of the most charitable people in the county.
During this time of giving, many are reaching into their pockets to help the victims of Superstorm Sandy.
The Salvation Army Teamed up with the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service for a food drive at the Madison Wal-Mart.
Can by can, hundreds of boxes were filled with dry goods.
Individual boxes will be given to a family, just in time for Thanksgiving.
Organizers say the response has been overwhelming, as each person finds a reason to give.
"If you were to sit here and watch about half the people that come out of the store donate at least something. So, we've got an 18-wheeler that's actually full,"said Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service Executive Director David Mallery.
"It's the holiday season and you think about the tragedy that happened to those people, and it very well could have been me or the people here in Mississippi. So you know Mississippi is all about giving, and we have big hearts. And we are just trying to reach out to the people that's in need," explained donor Loretta Phillips.
The 18-wheeler will leave for New Jersey on Monday morning.
