Radio DJ off the air for posting offensive comments to FB page

JACKSON, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Disc Jockey Bill Way has been on the air at WNWS 101.5 FM in Jackson for a long time.

Way is consistently named most popular morning DJ and radio personality in Jackson.

But, Bill Way's studio at 101.5 FM is now empty after he posted something to his personal Facebook page comparing First Lady Michelle Obama to "cheetah's daughter".

"Pimp walking President married to cheetah's daughter. Expect what you most certainly get. Bye bye Medicare, hello homelessness. I love America except for the idiots," said Jackson-Madison County NAACP President Harrell Carter.

Carter read Bill Way's Facebook status during a press conference Monday morning.

Many there called for Way to be fired.

"You're feeding a stereotype of a southern bigot," said resident Tim McDonald.

No one at WNWS would go on camera but in a written statement, management said, "WNWS-FM learned about the comments Bill Way made on his personal Facebook page. In no way do they reflect the positions or thoughts of any of us at WNWS-FM. We certainly don't condone the comments from Bill and appreciate his public apology. We're discussing his comments and apology. Considering the gravity of the situation, for now, by mutual agreement, Bill is taking a few days off."

Whatever Bill Way's fate, many in Jackson hope his words can lead to healing in the community.

"We need Mr. Way to take ownership of his words and let's see if we can't talk and create a dialogue with his help, with the station's help, with the sponsor's help," Carter said.

Station officials tell Action News 5 Bill Way is off the air until at least Monday.  Action News 5's call to his home was not returned.
