JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Rankin County State Representative Kevin McGee has resigned from office and agreed to pay a fine to resolve the ethics case against him.

Earlier this year, the Ethics Commission found McGee had violated state ethics laws because his company did business with state agencies while he was in the Legislature.

McGee appealed the decision but as part of the settlement, agreed to drop his appeal.

McGee also agreed to pay the maximum fine of $10,000, not do further business with the state for one year after he resigns and not to run for the Legislature again.

"This fine and resignation send a strong message that the Ethics Commission will aggressively pursue public officials who violate the public trust," said Ethics Commission Executive Director Tom Hood.
