Mayes' wife and mother are accused of helping him carry out the plan, which involved killing the girls' older sister and mother.
WHITEVILLE, TN -
(WMC-TV) – A community is rallying around two young girls who survived the unimaginable. Neighbors of Alexandria and Kyliyah Bain are vowing to help keep them safe and protect them as they recover from a terrifying ordeal.
Six months have passed since the Bain sisters were kidnapped and held captive in the woods by Adam Mayes, who killed himself as soon as they were found.
It may have been six months, but the pain caused by the two week ordeal is still present.
"Yes, we pray for them. We have a prayer list that goes out every week and they're on the prayer list," said Joleta Raines, who lives in Whiteville.
Alexandria, 12, and Kyliyah, 8, survived the diabolical plan hatched by family friend Adam Mayes.
Mayes killed their mother JoAnn and older sister, Adrienne, in May, before kidnapping the two girls and taking them to Mississippi.
"I just wish I really knew what happened and then again I don't. I'm sorry they're gone. I wish they were still here. I don't understand anyone's mind that can do that," said Whiteville resident Gail Carter.
We may never understand because Mayes killed himself before authorities could take him in. His wife and mother will face a grand jury in January on charges that they helped him carry out the plan.
"I can't do anything about what's already happened. My concern now is the girls, worried about their future," said Raines.
Their future is hard to piece together. The people of Whiteville are very protective of the Bain sisters. Any information about the girls is spoken in whispers.
"It's kind of quiet right now. I haven't heard a lot," said Raines.
Whiteville's police chief says Alexandria and Kyliah are doing well. Action News 5 learned the girls are being home schooled and they make occasional trips to the Whiteville library.
We are told they are undergoing counseling at the Carl Perkins Center in Jackson and they often spend time with extended family.
"They're gonna have to have a lot of help through it, for the next 20 to 30 years. Counseling and other things like that. They lost their mother and stepsister," said Carter.
Joleta Raines is active at First Baptist Church in Whiteville. She does not know the family personally, but her prayers are with them.
"They have a future. They're not just thrown to the side, not just forgotten. Because they lost a loved one, they have no hope...they do have hope. They have a community behind them," said Raines.
They also have Gary Bain, who is the biological father to Kyliah and adopted dad of Alexandria. Those we spoke to say Gary is doing what any loving father would do in this situation. He is protecting his daughters by keeping them out of the public eye and in counseling.
The trial against their captors could begin as early as next May. It has not been announced whether the Bain sisters will testify.
