Fitness challenge leads to food donation

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Flowood man is using fitness to help feed thousands of children in need of food in Mississippi. Chris Wartes, who promotes meal replacement ViSalus Sciences, donated hundreds of dollars worth of nutritious shakes and cookies to the Mississippi Food Network Tuesday.

The shakes and cookies make up 5,000 meals which will go toward the MFN's backpack program for kids.

Wartes used a 90-day health challenge sponsored by ViSalus to raise awareness about health and the MFN. People could donate by following Wartes' three month journey online, which was to train for a 140 mile Ironman triathlon.

While folks followed online they stepped up in a big way, according to Wartes.

"People were able to go there (to his website) and make monetary donations as well as our company which will match donations with the shake meals," Wartes said.

Wartes also donated $500, which were proceeds from a triathlon he helped organize, separate from the Ironman.

With his online following Wartes won his companies health challenge and is now one of 10 "Body by Vi" promoters headed to Hollywood to participate in an online challenge series which will be co-produced by Ben Silverman.

Silverman is the man behind NBC's "The Biggest Loser".
