Candlelight Vigil for School Bus Accident Victim

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Family and friends of four-year-old Nadya Slocum gathered in front of her home for a candlelight vigil Tuesday night. It was held at the same spot where the school bus accident happened last Friday.

Slocum's father says they have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

"It could've been so much worse. Nadya could be gone you know. Just on carelessness," said Tellis Moaton, Nadya Slocum's father.

Officials say one school bus failed to display it's stop sign to notify the other not to pass it. That is when Slocum's foot was run over.

The four-year-old's left foot had to be amputated over the weekend. She is still recovering at the hospital and may still need another surgery.

Loved ones are asking drivers to slow down and pay closer attention when they drive through streets like their's where kids frequently play.

"They treat this like an open highway and that could've been your child that got hit by another car." said Natasha Slocum's, Nadya's mother.

Nadya asked for a bicycle for Christmas and her mother said she is looking forward to the day when she can finally ride it.

The Jackson Police Department and Jackson Public Schools are still investigating the accident.
