JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

With the holiday shopping season getting underway, Jackson Police want to keep you and your valuables safe.

This week, they're putting more officers on the streets, and educating shoppers on how to protect their valuables.

Wednesday Jackson Police began Operation Safe Shop, placing officers in shopping areas across the city in efforts to keep crime down.

They're also warning shoppers on ways they can avoid becoming the target of holiday thieves.

Deputy Chief Lindsey Horton says, "The common problems people moving between their vehicles and a particular business establishment they tend to lose money or they might even have property they purchased taken away from them."

Police also remind people not to set their purses or wallets down unattended while loading purchases. Thieves are just waiting for an opportunity like that, to strike.

"Don't purchase any more than you can carry, you don't want to be speaking or talking on a cell phone while you're moving back and forth between the safety of your vehicle and a particular establishment and just be vigilant," says Horton.

It's always a good idea to put all purchases and valuables in the trunk or out of sight if you plan to leave your car unattended. Police are hoping their visibility, and shoppers on guard will help suppress crime this year.

Horton says, "We intend to saturate Jackson we can't be every place, criminals know that so we rely on citizens and their eyes to keep us alert."
