91-year-old burglary victim gets guns back

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A 91-year-old veteran, a U. S. Marine who served in the South Pacific in World War II, is thankful to have his stolen guns back. Six people were arrested Monday, for breaking into his McDowell Circle home in south Jackson. One of them was only 13-years-old.

Three guns, two .45 caliber pistols and one .22 caliber handgun, were given back to James Champion by the Jackson Police Department.

The former Marine sharpshooter had some choice words for anybody who might consider breaking into his home again, while he is there.

"All I can say is God have mercy on them," said Champion. "I don't have much time left here. And they are not gonna bother anybody else. That's a promise. I won't miss."

Champion says he hears gunshots being fired in his neighborhood all night long but he is  unafraid.

"Bang, bang, bang, bang. They are not intimidating me," said Champion. "They are not bothering me."

He says he was a member of Carlson's Raiders in World War II, a group that went behind enemy lines in the South Pacific. He doesn't like to talk about the war.

Champion and his 87 year old wife Josie have lived in this house since 1953 and he says he intends to stay here until he dies.
