Turkey Day 8K

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Before diving into that turkey, 800 runners participated in the Turkey Day 8K on Thanksgiving morning.

The runners and walkers started off on Highway 51 in Ridgeland. In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday several participants paid homage to the Thanksgiving bird. Ginger Gorman and her sister dressed up as turkeys, ready to run off calories in preparation for some big feasts.

"Standard turkey and dressing and pies and all that good stuff," is what Gorman said she and her family planned on eating.

Crystal Effler got into the turkey day spirit too. Effler also dressed up as turkey, wearing a colorful tutu and a turkey face on her sweatshirt.

"I don't usually eat turkey I'm the only person in my family who doesn't so I thought it'd be kinda funny to dress up like one," Effler told WLBT News.

Many used the 4.9 mile race to shed some calories.

"Get a chance to eat a great dinner without gaining so much weight," said runner Toshineda Lankston.

The race wasn't just about shedding the pounds. All proceeds from the Turkey Day 8K go back to the City of Ridgeland to expand and maintain its multi-purpose trails.

"Mayor McGee of Ridgeland his goal is to make it to where any Ridgeland resident has access to sidewalks or trail to go exercise," said Ridgeland's Fleet Feet Sports owner, Lesley Holleman.

Last year the Turkey Day 8K raised about $3,500 for the City of Ridgeland. This year organizers hope to exceed that goal by raising at least $5,000.
