FLOWOOD/RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Flowood and Ridgeland Police are ramping up patrols to keep shoppers safe this holiday season.
They say safety is the first thing they check off their wish list every year.
"Starting the day after Thanksgiving on Black Friday, Ridgeland Police
has a standing policy to where we always put additional officers on the
streets during those times to concentrate on our shopping areas," said
Lt. John Neal with Ridgeland Police Department.
Ridgeland Police have also set up a sub-station in Northpark Mall at the main entrance for shoppers who encounter any problems.
"We just ask that if people don't feel comfortable to give us a call. We've got officers that are within seconds away from them usually. The best prevention is to be on your toes and be aware of your surroundings," Lt. Neal said.
In Flowood, they have officers in every shopping center and a mobile command center at Dogwood Festival Market and Promenade.
Police are reminding shoppers to be aware of their surroundings and put all packages and valuables out of sight in their cars.
"Most crimes are opportunity. If a thief sees an easy purse laying on the front seat of a car, of course he's going ot take advantage of that," said Flowood Police Cpl. James Mooney.
Flowood Police say common sense about securing personal items can go a long way.
They're hoping strong visibility will keep the criminals away this holiday season.
