JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Have you ever thought about what it takes to work as a Jackson Police officer? Well, if so, your opportunity is right around the corner. The JPD Citizens Police Academy starts on Monday.

The week-long course gives average folks the chance to get some first-hand knowledge about what it takes for the department to protect and serve the public.

Those who participate in the academy will have the opportunity to learn about how dispatchers work in the 911 Communications Center. Among other activities, class members will learn about the various JPD divisions, plus take a ride-a-long with an officer and go to the firing range.

"We offer it three or four times a year spaces are still available we are proud to say we have 25 candidates thus far but we're looking for more," said JPD Officer Colendula Green.

To register for the JPD Citizens Police Academy call 601-960-1389. The weeklong class is free. It starts Monday, December 3rd.
