RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A former assistant middle school coach from Florence is accused of sex crimes involving a female student.

Twenty-seven-year-old Matthew Wilder taught at McLaurin and Florence middle schools, according to Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey.

Bailey said Wilder allegedly had inappropriate contact with the student while he was employed by the school district, but the encounter didn't happen on school grounds.

Wilder was arrested Thursday and was charged with one count of gratification of lust and one count of sexual battery.

The victim and her family brought the case to the attention of law enforcement, according to Bailey.

Authorities collected a cell phone, laptop and other items from Wilder's residence as evidence.

Wilder remains in jail without bond.

Bailey said Wilder is no longer an employee of the Rankin County School District.
