Brandon community rallies behind football team

BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

"I believe that we will win! I believe that we will win!" chanted Brandon High cheerleaders, just before the I-20 on-ramp Friday afternoon.

It was hard to find anyone in Brandon who doubted the Bulldogs would bring home the 6A title.

"One Team, One Town, One Dream, this has been our whole theme this week for Brandon. It is history making today, and we want to bring home that trophy," said teacher Jennifer Williams.

Bulldog fever swept through the Rankin County town this week.

Community spirit was easy to find as residents blew their horns at cheerleaders Friday afternoon. Even businesses got in on the act by posting encouraging signs on billboards.

Fans parked their cars along Highway 80 as the team made their way to Veteran's Stadium in Jackson.

"It's the best. I don't think it could be any better. They've done so much, all of the signs around Brandon," said senior Dance Team member Gracie Jackson.

"Just standing out here on the street and everybody blowing the horn, you get chills. It's crazy," said the mother of the Brandon High mascot Melissa Tidwell.

The parents of players also held signs. They say it's been a crazy and exciting week, but they're glad their boys have the support of so many.

"It brings tears to your eyes. I went to the pep rally this morning and I cried half the pep rally because I was excited and emotional and happy for the boys," said Joyce Taylor.

"I graduated from Brandon in 1991. My brother played back in '93, and just to see all the teams, all the fans, everybody pull together. It's a great community and atmosphere," said Tricia Opdyke.
