FLORENCE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Saturday night house fire in Rankin County leaves one man dead.

Firefighters and rescue crews responded to the 911 call some time after 8 p.m. to a home in the 1500 block of Highway 469, just south of Florence.

The call reported a man was possibly still inside the residence.

Firefighters retrieved 72-year-old Richard E. Grannan from inside the structure, but were unable to revive him.

Several pets also perished in the fire.

The victim's son told deputies he and his family came home to heavy smoke coming from the house, but were unable to rescue Grannan due to smoke and flames.

Rankin County Sheriff's Department Fire investigators and the state fire marshals office are investigating the cause of the fire.
