U-V lamps at nail salons studied for cancer risk

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A new study confirms that those lamps used to dry your nails after a manicure don't cause skin cancer.

There has been concern that artificial U-V lamps used at nail salons were linked to a risk of keratinocyte carcinoma which is the most common cancer in the U-S.

Researchers measured the wavelengths, wattage and irradiance of three different lamp models.

They determined it would take 250 years of weekly U-V lamp sessions to significantly raise the risk of cancer.

This study was led by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and published in 'Journal of Investigative Dermatology.'
