Company extends deadline for Morton apartment residents to be out

MORTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi News Now has new information on the eviction of an entire apartment complex in Morton.

Thursday, the Georgia company that manages Spring Lane Apartments extended the deadline for residents to be out from Friday to Wednesday.

Residents will also be receiving $1,000 to assist with moving expenses.

The management company, Fickling and Company located in Macon, Ga., inspected every unit Nov. 27 and 28. Two days later, residents were handed the eviction notices.

The company said it is shuttering the property due to deteriorated conditions.

When we visited the property Thursday, we found an empty apartment completely gutted and filled with what appeared to be mold on the woodwork, walls and ceilings.

We also found signs of apparent mold in occupied apartments.

An elderly woman had evidence of mold in her apartment. Another resident, Latoya Sample, has three young children. She says the mold was painted over and now it's showing through the ceiling and walls again.

Morton Mayor Greg Butler said Thursday the property owners should have given residents 30 days to get out.
