Driver killed in Vancleave accident identified

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

WLOX has learned 46-year-old Brian Orchard of Vancleave was killed in Thursday's wreck accident in Vancleave, according to Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd.

The accident happened just after Vancleave Middle students were dismissed Thursday afternoon shortly after 3. Orchard was rounding a curve in his car on John's Bayou Road and lost control, slamming underneath the school bus.

Emergency responders described what happened next.

"Central Jackson County fire department responded," Jackson County fire coordinator Earl Etheridge said. "They did extraction on patient in the private vehicle and then they helped do the treatment on seven injured students that were transported to local hospitals and they stood by while the sheriff's department and the wreckers were able to get the vehicles separated."

One of the first people to arrive was good Samaritan Carl Wyatt, who offered aid and comfort to the students.

"They were nervous. They were shook up and there was a couple of them in the back that were crying," Wyatt said. "I don't think they were hurt that bad. I think they were just shook up more than anything else. My wife got my phone and called the school people and got the administrators down here and then we brought the kids up here to our house in the yard to get them away from all that down there."

While seven students were hurt, others were emotionally torn by what they saw. Help will be there for them.

Barry Amacker is the Jackson County school superintendent.

"We will have absolutely all of our counselors ready to go tomorrow to help any of the students that would like to talk to them. Plus we will get organized with our counselors to give some proactive information out on how to cope," Amacker said.

The accident investigation is ongoing.
