JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The coating used on aspirin to protect the stomach may interfere with its effectiveness in preventing heart attack and stroke.

Cardiologists have long believed that five to 40-percent of the population is 'aspirin resistant'  and therefore prescribing more expensive prescription drugs.

However, a new study could not identify a single case of aspirin resistance in 400 healthy people and concluded the coating impeded with the way aspirin entered the body.

Researchers recommend patients stick with non-coated, generic aspirin.
