JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Children's Museum celebrates its second birthday with several parties on Saturday.

Santa was also there handing out candy canes to kids.

A birthday party was held at the museum to celebrate its opening.

The theme was "Scooby Dooby Doo the Mississippi Children's Museum Turns Two."

Kids participated in a number of activities to solve a mystery.

Later a fancy holiday tea was held for mothers and daughters.

Museum officials say the facility has hosted nearly 500,000, showing families a passion for learning through play and discovery.

"We've had a family literacy program where all of the children who participated increased their reading readiness scores by 50% or more. We've seen lots of families here and we've inspired them to get healthy and active together. We've also had science, technology, engineering, and mathematics programs that are inspiring our next generation," said Mississippi Children's Museum Director of Development and Marketing Elaina Jackson.

The Mississippi Children's Museum opened in December 2010.
