Caterer hosts food drive/party for less fortunate children

Posted: Updated:

The season of giving continues in the River City where a local caterer hosted a party and food giveaway for community children.

Sack Express Catering held a celebration for children Saturday at noon at Riverfront Park in Vicksburg.

Dozens of youngsters joined the fun at the playground and picnic area along the Mississippi River.

Organizers Michael Bunch and Sherrica McGruder reached out to less fortunate children providing free food and entertainment.

Bunch, who is a parent, said he's seen firsthand how hunger affects the behavior of children in the community.

"I go to a lot of schools and stuff and I talk to the kids and the main reason for them acting out in school is because they're hungry. And the only time they get to eat is at school. That's what they tell me. So I'm just celebrating a good cause here today and just feeding the kids," added Bunch.

"We just were trying to find a way to give back to the kids and all of the other organizations. They do Christmas Toy Drives so we wanted to come up with something that would cause the kids to come out beside toys. That's why we thought about food," said McGruder.

This is the second year the event has been held.

The catering company is gearing up for its annual Christmas Giveaway to be held December 24th.
