It could be more than a week before the National Transportation Safety Board releases a preliminary report about a weekend plane crash in Rankin County.
According to Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey, an experimental bi-plane lost engine power about 4:08 p.m. Sunday. The plane hit several tree tops, then crashed in a wooded area near a runway.
The plane crashed near the Woodbridge Subdivision just off Three Prong Road.
Rankin County Deputies, along with Reservoir Fire Department, Reservoir Patrol, Rankin EOC and AMR responded to the scene.
According to Sheriff Bailey the passenger in the plane was able to call 911 from his cell phone and was able to describe the area where the plane crashed and was able to give GPS coordinates.
A resident of the area was able to assist emergency responders by flying in an ultra light plane, locating the crash site and circling the area. Residents of the subdivision volunteered their four wheel drive vehicles and ATVs and carried first responders into the heavily wooded area where they were able to locate the plane and the occupants.
While the passenger of the aircraft was not hurt, deputies found the pilot lying underneath the wing of the plane. He appeared to have injuries to his face and ankle, but those injuries did not appear to be life threatening. The pilot was transported to UMC.
The pilot and passenger are both Rankin County residents, but their names have not been released by authorities. The Federal Aviation Administration will be at the crash site on Monday to begin their investigation.
