JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

New Horizon Church International in Jackson is a part of faith based organizations helping low income families get free cell phones.

The church hosted "Connect Mississippi" Sunday to allow residents to apply for free cell phone under the Federal Communications Commission Lifeline Program.

Lifeline offers free cell service and up to 250 minutes each month for those who qualify for programs like Medicaid, food stamps or earn less than $15,000.00 per year.

The phones are designed as an emergency communications aid for making doctors and employee appointments, as well as calls for transportation.

"We no longer have public pay phones so you can't put a quarter in and call someone. So for folks who are not able to have a cell phone, it really makes them out of the loop. They're not able to communicate. They're not able to call for jobs. They're not able to set doctor's appointments. It really just provides a very minimal basic line of communication on an emergency basis," said Michael Harris with the Mississippi Faith Based Coalition for Community Renewal.

More than 50 million people are eligible for the program, but officials say only 10 million have registered nationally.

So far this week 400 people have signed up statewide.
