Man shot in car in west Jackson

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Neighbors are stunned at the sheer number of gunshots they heard Tuesday, just before lunchtime.

"I heard a couple of shots, then probably about 2-3 seconds later I heard 10, maybe 15 more," says Jaime Carpenter. "It didn't sound like an exchange of (gunfire). Just sounded like one person doing the shooting, all of a sudden I heard a car going up the street."

Carpenter says he didn't see the car that sped away, but in the past he's seen the car that was processed for evidence Tuesday. Police say a 21 year old black male was shot in the neck while sitting in the white Chevy vehicle. As of Tuesday afternoon, police had not released his identity.

"Right now he was just shot once in the neck area. It might be multiple times. We're still trying to investigate that as well. He is at a local hospital recovering," says JPD Officer Colendula Green.

The car was towed from the scene as police interviewed witnesses, trying to pin down any motive. They left the scene with no clear suspect in mind.

It's not the first time those who live nearby have heard gunshots, but we're told crime in the area has increased in recent years. Some people say it would really help police if neighbors would speak up regularly and tell police what they see and hear, instead of being afraid to do so.

"The community needs to come together, be more efficient on keeping crime down themselves," Carpenter says.
