Head-on crash kills one on Mississippi River bridge in Natchez

One person is dead and three others injured after a fiery head-on collision on the Mississippi River bridge near Natchez.

Vidalia, Louisiana Police Chief Arthur Lewis says about 8:40 a.m. Saturday witnesses told officers a green Mercury SUV, driven by Natchez resident Pete Taylor, 66, was traveling west when a Mazda going east moved into the westbound lane.

The driver of the Mazda, Kerry Davis Byargeon, 36, originally from Catahoula Parish, died at a local hospital.

Two children were taken to a Natchez hospital and later transferred to UMC in Jackson, with non life-threatening injuries. The children are listed in stable condition at UMC.

Taylor is currently listed in stable condition at Rapides Medical Center in Alexandria, Louisiana.

At the time of the crash, the westbound bridge was shut down for the "Jingle All The Way River Bridge 5-K Run."

Traffic was routed to the eastbound bridge.

One vehicle caught fire as a result of the crash, according to Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield.

Vidalia police are investigating the accident.
