EAST POINT, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

An early morning house fire is believed to have been started by a Christmas tree that was plugged into an extension cord and left on overnight.

Firefighters told CBS Atlanta News that flames and heavy smoke could be seen pouring from the Gus Thornhill Drive home when crews arrived around 3 a.m.

A father and his 16-year-old daughter were forced to escape from a second story window.

The two were outside the home when fire units arrived and said a smoke alarm woke them up.

The teen was treated for an arm injury and smoke inhalation. Both the father and daughter were taken to an area hospital, firefighters said.

There were no other reported injuries.

Around 50 percent of the home was damaged.
