Too much milk can decrease iron levels

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A new study suggests that although milk is a great source of Vitamin C and Calcium for kids, it should be consumed in moderation.

A new study of more than 1,300 children between the ages of two and five finds cow's milk can decrease kids' iron levels. The milk has components that can block the absorption of iron in young children.

But researchers say two cups a day are sufficient to boost Vitamin D and other nutrients in most children with a minimum impact on iron levels stored in the body.

The study was led by researchers at St. Michael's Hospital in Canada and published in Pediatrics.
