Radiation-induced cancer risk should be weighed against benefits

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

We hear a lot of worrisome news about repeated exposure to radiation but a new study finds these screenings are often worth the long-term risks.

Doctors use C-T imaging to diagnose and monitor life threatening conditions but studies have shown these screenings are linked to a higher lifetime risk of cancer.

Harvard University researchers say doctors should take a patient's immediate risk of death from their disease into account before deciding against these exams.

That is based on their analysis of testicular cancer patients whose risk of death from their cancer was more than three times higher than their long-term risk of death from radiation-induced cancers.
