Compounding pharmacies under scrutiny

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Food and Drug Administration has met with public health officials from all 50 states on how to bolster regulation of compounding pharmacies.

The move follows a multi-state outbreak of fungal meningitis that's killed 39 people and sickened more than 600.

All of the patients had received steroid injections to treat chronic pain.

Those injections from the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts were later found to be contaminated with mold.

States are primarily responsible for overseeing compounding pharmacies, which are often small and fill specific orders for patients.

But some say the FDA should play a greater role in regulating larger compounding pharmacies, like the New England Compounding Center.
