Claiborne deputy shoots man during foot chase

PORT GIBSON, Miss. (AP) - A 24-year-old Claiborne County man was shot by a Claiborne County sheriff's deputy Thursday.

The shooting occurred Thursday night in the Lacache subdivision southeast of Port Gibson. Sheriff Marvin Lucas tells the Vicksburg Post that a man pointed an assault rifle at the deputy during a foot chase. He says the deputy fired once, hitting the man in the chest

The deputy was investigating a complaint of shots fired. Lucas says the man used his car to ram the deputy's car, then fled on foot.

Lucas isn't naming the deputy or shooting victim. Lucas says the victim was taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and he doesn't know his condition.

Lucas says the deputy is on paid leave pending investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
