JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
It's been a Christmas Eve Steven Craft of Jackson won't soon forget, as he arrived home to find himself staring down the barrel of a rifle.
"It's actually gotten to the point where there's a life or death situation," he told us as he gave his chilling account.
Craft says at about 1:45 Christmas Eve morning, he backed into his driveway. His little Chihuahua, Ladybug, normally runs and greets him, but on this morning the dog sat on the porch and wouldn't go any further. That's when Craft knew something was wrong.
"When I got out of the car, I noticed a guy got out of the bushes. He was sitting behind my bushes right here. He stood from behind the bushes with a .22 rifle ruger," Craft tells us. "He demanded the keys to my vehicle. When he reached out to get my keys, that's when I reached with my left hand, grabbed the barrel of the rifle. Started fighting him with my right hand."
Craft says he recognized the man in the ski mask as another man who lives one street over, on Lamar Street. The two wrestled for the weapon in a patch of grass by the driveway.
"Two shots went off, but I never did let the barrel of the gun go. I kept it pointed to the ground. I ended up overpowering him, getting the rifle from him," he tells us.
Craft says he fired one shot as the offender ran off. No one was hurt.
He also called the man's mother.
"She laughed when I was out here informing her what her son was doing," he says.
Craft says police took the bullet casings, but they have not yet arrested the man he claims tried to carjack him. Craft says he won't let the issue drop.
"I like to get out here, work for what I want, I like to dress nice, have nice things. But I'm not gonna live my life in fear for no one," he says.
