CLAIBORNE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Three on Your Side received an email asking that we investigate a complaint about a starving horse. The animal is kept at 2167 Old Highway 61 north, in Claiborne County.
Georgia Lynn, who operates the Animal Rescue League in Vicksburg, sent us a picture of the horse. She was shocked about the way it looked
We called Claiborne County Sheriff Marvin Lucas, and he invited us to come down and look at the horse which was on some land near where he lives. The horse owner is a friend of the sheriff.
Forty-four-year-old Woodie Cain says the horse is not starving. He says he feeds it $75 worth of horse feed every week. It is in a pasture with another horse he has had for 15 years.
"As you can see from my co op bill, we feed the high protein feed, every day," said Cain. "I feed twice a day. We have a big round barrel, there's tubs of water out there."
Sheriff Lucas says he is sure the horse is being fed on a regular basis.
"Hay and food," said Sheriff Lucas. "Every day."
Both the Animal Rescue League in Vicksburg and Jackson are monitoring the condition of the horse and have agreed to take it if the owner want's to give it up.
While the horse is certainly not fat, we witnessed that it is being fed.
