PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The water rose quickly on Skylane Drive in Pearl on Tuesday, Christmas Day. Nancy Ingram says her family endured three flash floods on the holiday.
"I called family and said Christmas dinner may not be at my house unless y'all got a boat," she says.
On Wednesday, the waters had drained away to expose the sandbags that she and neighbors used to keep the water out of their homes.
"I try to keep about 20 of them on hand. Always. For 27 years as long as I've lived here," she tells us.
Inside the front door of Ingram's home, there's a patch of ceramic tile about 3 ft. Long and 3 ft. Wide. That's by design. She says over the years she's seen water come in under her doorway, and it's much easier to get water off ceramic tile than it is to get rain out of carpet.
Ingram believes the flash flooding problem on her street could be alleviated with more attention from the city. She says while crews do clean out the gutters, they neglect the drain holes.
"All these drain holes along Skylane Drive are full. I've been here 27 years. I have a son 22, probably stuff from when he was little still in them drain holes," she tells us.
We contacted Pearl Mayor Brad Rogers, and he disagrees. He says the city works hard to alleviate public works problems. He says problems along low-lying Skylane Drive are inevitable during heavy rains, and the flooding on Christmas Day was caused solely by the large amount of rain.
Mayor Rogers says crews clean the drain holes and gutters out regularly, and when they do, they find basketballs, garbage can lids, and other large items in the gutters. He encourages people to call his office at 601-932-3500 when they have a problem.
