South Jackson flooding

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A south Jackson neighborhood felt the wrath of the storm's heavy rains, but residents we talked to say the flooding could have been prevented.

The joy and relaxation of Christmas morning quickly turned into panic for Timothy Young and his family.

Young said, "We were trapped inside this morning and it didn't take but like 30 minutes."

Young and other residents along Mesilla Drive called the City of Jackson as the flood water rose but he says the response he got angered him as a taxpayer.

Young said, "Cuz they told us they got one truck that's riding around the city doing city work today out this whole big city. And I'm like, one truck? You know, one truck."

The problem was clogged drains and rather than wait on that one truck and risk flood waters getting into homes, this man, Justin Jones, got into action.

Jones said, "Had to go out get one of these little rods, try to take out the debris that's up inside the drain and unclog a little bit and let it start spinning, try to keep the leaves from going in it."

He continued, "Had to do what I had to do, but same time though, city could be out unstopping it instead of us out here. We could be in house eating, unwrapping gifts and stuff."

No one was injured.
