Tamarra Butler will seek her aunt's senate seat

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Tamarra Grace Butler of Jackson has announced that she will seek the Mississippi Senate District 28 seat left vacant by the death of her aunt, Senator Alice Harden.

Butler, a Democrat, is a lifelong resident of Jackson's Washington Addition and is a graduate of Jim Hill High School, Alcorn State University and the University of Southern Mississippi.

I guess you could say Grace has been a Senator in training for years now," said Dennis Harden, the husband of the late Senator. "I'm behind Grace 200 percent. Alice would be proud to know she has taken up the public service challenge."

Butler has been actively involved in community organizations and has been visible in legislative, municipal, mayoral and judicial campaigns all over the state.

She has also worked in the Mississippi Senate for four years as both a docket and calendar clerk.

Governor Phil Bryant has set a special election for February 5th to fill Harden's seat.
