JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

With temperatures forecasted to drop below freezing, shelter's like Billy Brumfield House are even more important for those in need.

"A person not knowing where to go is most unfortunate and it would be devastating to have someone freeze to death when there is a place they could go," said Wilbert Logan, Billy Brumfield House Director.

Shelter organizers say many homeless men can be reluctant to ask for help and don't want to accept handouts, but on cold nights like the Metro area has experienced over the Christmas holiday, the shelter stressed the idea that they are giving a hand-up not a handout. Some of the men staying at the shelter said cold weather means planning ahead.

"Can't just do the spur of the moment thing and say 'oh, uh oh, I don't have a place'. Just be smart and plan ahead," explained Raymond Brudka who is staying at Billy Brumfield House.

Mayor Harvey Johnson says the city will make shelters available in the cold weather for both homeless and those without heating in their homes. But he said many without heat are hesitant to leave their home and stay in the shelter.

Billy Brumfield House has 24 beds but the Opportunity Center, also run by Stewpot, is helping give those in need another option for a place to seek shelter.
