JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The City of Jackson's 51st police recruit class was sworn in Friday before a packed house at the police training academy.

The graduates marched in unison and took their seats as top commanders acknowledged those who scored highest in academics and training.

The young police recruits endured 12 grueling weeks of intense training. In fact, after the three month course, which began with 23 hopefuls, 18 graduates were pinned with silver badges during Thursday's ceremony.

"It means I have to be a positive role model, set an example for everything and be the best that I can be to help my community and give back," said graduate Zykia Webb. "I put in a lot of work, so I'm prepared for everything."

The 23-year-old received the top academic, and most distinguished graduate awards.

This weekend the new officers will partner with precinct commanders to sharpen their skills in community policing and crime fighting on the streets of Jackson.
