Stokes: Who is paying for inmates housed outside Hinds?

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Hinds County supervisor wants to know who is footing the bill for the suspects arrested by Jackson police but being held at other county jails.

Supervisor Kenneth Stokes said JPD has been sending people who have been arrested to as many as five county jails since the destruction to Pod C at the Hinds County Detention Center in July.

Jackson police officials say the department does send some prisoners to other facilities but did not release which counties.

Stokes wants to know whose responsibility is it to pay those jails for holding the prisoners -- Hinds County or the city of Jackson?

"If, when we negotiated the contract to rebuild Pod C and we did not include these other counties; then if it's not too late to go back to the drawing board, we need to go back. You can't pay just Rankin and Madison Counties but yet you leave out Yazoo County and other counties," Stokes said.

Stokes said he will bring up his concerns at Monday's board of supervisors meeting.
