JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Flu cases are now widespread in more than two-thirds of the country, and while flu hit early in Mississippi, the numbers are trending up in about half of the state's public health districts.
Mississippi's flu activity is still widespread and higher than national rates. See Mississippi Flu Statistics
Already, thousands of people have been infected in 41 states.
It's one of the earliest and worst flu seasons in years.
Experts say if this season follows the pattern of other seasons we can expect 5 to 20 percent of the population to get the flu this year.
Flu symptoms include a fever or chills, a cough, sore throat and runny nose, muscle aches, headaches, and in some cases, diarrhea and vomiting.
