Powell elected state representative in Rankin Co.

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Rankin County voters went to the polls to pick one of four candidates vying to claim the seat of former District 59 State Rep. Kevin McGee.

Brent Powell topped fellow republicans Scot Allen and Bradley Lum and independent Benny L. Hubbard with 1,513 votes or 52 percent. Lum received the second most votes with 715, Hubbard was third with 552 and Allen received 147 votes.

A total of 2,936 ballots were cast.

The non-partisan special election was held to fill the house District 59 seat, which encompasses the Ross Barnett Reservoir area and parts of Brandon and Flowood.

McGee resigned in November over ethics violations.
